Test of CMS Muon Chambers In Situ — •Emanuel Jacobi, Kerstin Hoepfner, Thomas Hebbeker, Georg Altenhoefer, and Philipp Biallass for the CMS collaboration — III. Physikalisches Institut A, RWTH Aachen, D-52056 Aachen
The III. Phys. Inst. A of the RWTH Aachen took part in the construction of the muon chambers for CMS. All chambers have been produced and the majority is installed into the detector on the CERN site. During the subsequent chamber commissioning it is important to identify and eventually fix defects, since it will be hard to access the chambers later on. At the same time it is the first opportunity to take data with the drift tube muon system of the CMS detector at this stage.
The commissioning routine involves several steps: In the beginning a check of the on-chamber readout and trigger electronics where parameters like crosstalk, threshold, cabling and the successful operation of all subparts are monitored. This is followed by taking test pulses to determine properties like the internal signal delays of each chamber. For the main part data from cosmic muons traversing the detector are collected. The data are analyzed with ROOT and the CMS specific software CMSSW. The goal is to determine such parameters as efficiency, resolution or noise.
The commissioning procedure and the results of the analysis in terms of chamber performance will be presented.
