LOPES3: Dual-polarization operation — •Gina Isar for the LOPES collaboration — Institut für Kernphysik, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, 76021 Karlsruhe
When Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays interact with particles in the Earth’s atmosphere, they produce a shower of elementary particles propagating towards the ground. LOPES30 is an array of 30 dipole antennas set up to measure the East-West polarization, which have an absolute calibration and which investigate the radio emission from these showers in detail, clarifying if the technique is useful for large scale applications (like in LOFAR - Low Frequency ARray or at the Pierre Auger Observatory).
The LOPES (LOFAR Prototype Station) experiment co-located with the KASCADE-Grande experiment (an extended set-up of KArlsruhe Shower Core and Array DEtector - KASCADE) at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, measures the radio emission of air showers in the 40 - 80 MHz frequency range.
Currently, LOPES30 is being reconfigured to perform dual-polarization measurements. A number of antennas have been configured for measurements of the North-South polarization. The dual-polarization measurement of the radio emission will allow to verify the geosynchrotron effect as the dominant emission process in air showers. First analysis results of the new operation status are reported.
