Study of top-antitop production with the ATLAS Detector at the LHC — •Andrea Bangert, Siegfried Bethke, Nabil Ghodbane, Tobias Göttfert, Roland Härtel, Stefan Kluth, Richard Nisius, Sophio Pataraia, and Jochen Schieck — Max Planck Institute für Physik, München, Deutschland

The Max-Planck-Institute is involved in measurements of top-antitop production in the semileptonic decay channel with the ATLAS detector at the LHC.

The observables studied are the top quark mass and the top-antitop production cross-section.

The group has investigated the optimization of cuts used to discriminate top-antitop events from physics background, lepton identification, jet properties, the selection of top-antitop events with and without b-tagging, and trigger issues.

The group has also completed in-depth studies comparing the performance of different jet algorithms in the measurement of the top quark mass. In particular the group is investigating optimization of the kT algorithm for use in the reconstruction of top-antitop events. All studies were performed using simulated signal and background events from the latest ATLAS simulated Monte Carlo samples.
