First results and status of the OPERA experiment — •Björn Wonsak — Universität Hamburg, Institut für Experimentalphysik

OPERA is a long-basline neutrino experiment dedictated to the study of the muon neutrino to tau neutrino oscillation. Using the high-energy CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS), it will be the first experiment looking directly for the taus appearing from oscillation of muon neutrinos. In August 2006 a first run with CNGS neutrinos was performed successfully. Since then, we have used cosmic muons for the commissioning of the detector. The next beam run is planned for 2007. A brief summary of the performance of the electronic detectors in these runs is given. Special emphasis will be given to the precision tracker (PT), which has been built by our group. It is part of the muon-spectrometer of Opera. First results for the track reconstruction will be presented.
