A scintillating fiber tracker readout by silicon photomultipliers — •Henning Gast, Thomas Kirn, Gregorio Roper Yearwood, and Stefan Schael — Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule, Aachen, Germany
We present the results from a beamtest of a prototype for a new high-resolution scintillating fiber (SciFi) tracker with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) readout. Using 300µ m thin fibers and novel Photonique SiPMs we achieved efficiencies above 97% and a signal-over-noise ratio better than 10. Given the performance of Photonique SiPMs we show the expectation for scintillating fibers read out by superior Hamamatsu SiPMs of which a few prototypes are available to us. We discuss the projected performance of the final design of the SciFi tracker that will consist of modules of 1024 250 µ m diameter fibers arranged in 8 layers. Unlike existing SciFi trackers, our design will require at most moderate cooling and use only off-the-shelf electronics, allowing for a very compact, low-cost tracker design.
