A Multinational Enrichment Facility in Iran as a Solution to the Current Crisis — •Geoffrey Forden — Science, Technology and Society Programme, MIT
Iran and the West appear to be moving relentlessly toward either a military show down or Iran withdrawing from the NPT and proceeding unchecked and unmonitored with its nuclear ambitions. However, there is a compromise that satisfies both sides' bottom line: it assures the West that Iran is not developing a nuclear bomb and provides Iran with uranium enrichment on Iranian soil. A multinational enrichment facility with Western scientists, technicians, managers, and bookkeepers working side-by-side with their Iranian counterparts would provide the most reliable way of insuring that Iran does not get a nuclear weapon. This talk will outline our proposal and the physical and social safeguards inherent in its design.
