Open Access Publishing and the Role of New Journal of Physics — •Eberhard Bodenschatz — MPI for Dynamcis and Self-Organization, Goettingen, Germany
This talk will give a short introduction to the main aspects of Open Access (OA) publishing. It will discuss why OA publishing is in the best interest of the author, the reader, the scientific community, and the general public. It will show that OA-publishing transcends the natural sciences and will become commonplace in all fields of inquiry and also in the media. It will be argued that quality control requires an "editorial system" combined with a responsible publisher, and that the OA publishing model can best guarantee the future of electronically published materials. The important issue of "Who pays?" will be addressed and "hidden" costs of traditional publishing will be contrasted with the "open" financial models for OA. The growing importance of institutional repositories and their tight connections to OA-copyright will be discussed. The development of New Journal of Physics will be presented. The Institute of Physics and the German Physical Society founded NJP in 1998 as one of the pioneering OA journals. It will be shown that NJP has grown into a general physics journal of the highest quality. The talk will close with a discussion of the WWW2 and why it holds many opportunities, but at the same time requires the scientific community to develop new models and quality control mechanisms.
