Information for Physicists: The German National Library of Science and Technology — •Esther Tobschall and Irina Sens — Technische Informationsbibliothek, Welfengarten 1B, D-30167 Hannover
The German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) should be known by the physicists: In her function as National Library for all areas of engineering and its basic sciences the TIB is the centre of literature and information provision in physics. The broad spectrum of services includes subject specific and customised solutions, adapted to the needs of patrons, physics departments for example. The Physics Virtual Library as subject portal for physics is a suitable platform, providing the needed infrastructure as well.
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) is funding electronic resources for research purposes, such as databases or journal archives. In this context, the activities of the TIB also focus on content relevant for physics: Central physics journals like the Journal of Applied Physics (AIP Digital Archive) are licensed nationwide via the TIB.
How to optimise the supply of information relevant to the physicists has to be discussed together with the scientific community.
