Inferring photospheric velocities from a sequence of photospheric magnetograms. — •Jean Santos and Joerg Buechner — Max-Planck Institute for Solar System Research - MPS

The horizontal and vertical flows in the photosphere are important in the process of buildup of free magnetic energy in the corona. For example, horizontal motions can twist or shear the magnetic field and vertical motions can increase the magnetic flux content in the solar atmosphere. In this work we summarize our results of the application of three different methods to determine the photospheric flows from photospheric magnetograms of different active regions and one simulation case from a mixed polarity evolution. The objective is to validate the methods comparing qualitatively the retrieved velocity with the descriptions of the evolution of the magnetic field in the active regions and, in the case of simulation data, to have a quantitative comparison with the original velocity.
