Utilizing peturbed angular correlation spectroskopy (PAC), the behaviour of isolated europium impurities in ZnO has been investigated. The radioactive probe rare earth atoms 149Gd/149Eu were produced and recoil implanted by nuclear reactions. After annealing at 500 degree Celsius, the first spectrum of a 149Eu(11/2-) quadrupolar interaction has been measured. From spectra of the combined interaction, evidence for the realization of the Eu2+(7/2) ground state has been found.
