In this work we present the controlled growth of ordered ZnO nanostructures by a vapor phase transportation method in a horizontal tube furnace. The ordered ZnO nanostructures are grown using pre-structured gold catalyst patterns, which are produced by electron beam lithography as well as by gold evaporation through a mask of self organized polystyrene balls. The growth is conducted at different temperatures (from 500 to 800 C) under a constant pressure of several hundred mbar and a constant N2 flow.

The morphology of the ZnO nanostructures is found to be very sensitive to the substrate material and growth parameters. A GaN substrate appears to be more suitable for perpendicular growth of ⟨ 0001 ⟩ ZnO than Si or Sapphire. Low temperature photoluminescence measurements show predominant emission in the UV region of the spectra, indicating high sample quality. Typically three donor bound excitons, I4 , I5/6 , I9 and the A-free exciton are observed. The corresponding donors are assumed to be hydrogen, aluminum, and indium, respectively.
