Several novel methanofullerenes have been synthesized. The molecular structures of these new C60 derivatives resemble closely the structure of the up to date most successful fullerene, [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), which is applied in organic solar cells for more than 10 years. Polymer solar cells were produced by blending these novel fullerenes or PCBM with poly[3-hexylthiophene] (P3HT) in bulk heterojunctions and characterized by standard methods like current-voltage characteristics and spectral photocurrent.
