Uncertain rate constants and unidentified processes are still a major source of uncertainty in modelling tropospheric gas-phase chemistry. Inverse modelling is used to deduce improved rate parameters from experimental data that were obtained in the simulation chamber SAPHIR (Simulation of Atmospheric Photochemistry In a large Reaction Chamber), where tropospheric chemistry can be measured under conditions that are typical for the lower troposphere. We shall report our results for a clean air experiment with low burdens of organic compounds.
Sensitivity and dependency studies using simulated measurements (= modelled time series supplied with noise according to the precision of the measurement instruments) are shown to provide an efficient tool to assess the validity of the approach.
