We consider a single inertial Brownian particle in a symmetric periodic potential. Recently [1,2], it was shown that such a system is likely to exhibit absolute negative mobility (ANM), once thermal equilibrium is broken by a time-periodic force. E.g. the particle climbs uphill against a static tilt of the potential. The effect is due to noisy chaos in the model. We give an intuitive explanation, explain related effects, explore the the parameter region associated with ANM and consider generalizations of the model. Recent experiments [3] with Josephson Junctions show very good agreement with our predictions.
