About the existence of the Au(110) surface state at the Ȳ point — •Andreas Nuber1, Frank Forster1, Friedrich Reinert1, and Kenya Shimada2 — 1Universität Würzburg, Experimentelle Physik II, Am Hubland, 97074 Würzburg, Germany — 2Hiroshima Synchrotron Radiation Center, Hiroshima University, Japan
Presently there are some discussions and inconsistent results about the existence of the Shockley-type surface state at the Ȳ point of the surface Brillouin zone on the (1× 2) reconstructed Au(110) surface. We investigated this surface by high-resolution angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARUPS). In our investigation we could not find any evidence of a surface state on the clean Au(110) surface, neither at the Γ point nor at the Ȳ point. Furthermore we deposited thin films of Xe and Ag in order to investigate the changes of the surface electronic structure. With about 2 ML of Ag adsorbed, a surface state at Ȳ shows up with E0=450 meV which is surprisingly a lot higher than the reported binding energy of the surface state on a clean Ag(110) surface. Adsorbing noble gases on the clean (1× 2) reconstructed Au(110) surface induced a coverage dependent backfolding effect.
