We report on the preparation and characterization of Mn6Cr-Single Molecule Magnets on a HOPG(0001) surface.
The Mn6Cr-molecules show 1D molecular arrangements with many interesting features, such as the occurrence of discrete kink angles in the molecular chains of 30 deg., only two different molecular orientations, the orientation of the chains along the main crystal axis of HOPG and much larger molecule-molecule distances than expected from the van der Waals radii of the molecules. By STS we characterized Mn6Cr, thus gaining information on the electronic levels of the molecule and the shift of the levels whether it is part of a chain or not. One of our goals is to obtain data about the exact orientation of the molecule in respect to the surface; thus we can make a statement for the physical interaction why the molecules are assembling in chains. First results of these measurements will be presented.
