The EU-IP RISC-RAD on the quantification of the risks of low doses of ionizing radiation — •Herwig G. Paretzke — Institut für Strahlenschutz, HelmholtzZentrum München, Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Gesundheit und Umwelt, Neuherberg
In 2003 more than 30 European research institutes joined forces to tackle the old problem of low dose cancer risk quantification by ionizing radiation from the mechanistic side in an coordinated effort, namely RISC-RAD. This large project is structured into five work packages: WP1 "Early genomic/cellular responses to ionizing radiation", WP2 "Delayed and epigenetic effects of ionizing radiation. Contribution of cellular ageing and genomic instability to multi stage tumour development", WP3 "Preneoplastic lesions induced by ionizing radiation and development of associated tumours", WP4 "Genetic factors of radiation carcinogenesis", WP5 "Modeling for risk assessment". This lecture will give an overview of the present status of this ongoing (until fall 2008) project and discuss its latest results regarding the quantification of radiation risks of low doses of ionizing radiation.
