Strong light fields are known to provide adiabatic alignment of molecules in free space [1]. Furthermore, such light fields can be used to control dissociation dynamics of molecules [2]. Here we present results on the photodissociation of CH3I molecules in a strong infrared laser field of up to 1012 W/cm2. Using velocity map slice imaging we measure the three-dimensional velocity distribution of the iodine photofragment. The images reveal significant changes of the dissociation dynamics with increasing laser intensity. In particular, we find that the light field couples the two spin-orbit states of iodine during the dissociation. In the future, this work will be extended to study bimolecular collisions in the laser field.
