When material is energized on a very short timescale in comparison with the time of sound relaxation, the stress is confined due to inertia. Unloading of the stress causes the appearance of tensile stress. With MD methods we study the fragmentation of solids, the nucleation and development of voids and the materials thermodynamic pathways through different phases. The calculations are performed for several metal potentials as well as for a Lennard-Jones system. We reveal a universality of materials response independent on the type of material, which can be explained in terms of cohesion energy (depth of interatomic potential). We study the microscopic view of fragmentation, i.e. the formation of voids in liquid material or spallation of solid phase. Finally, we follow the thermodynamic pathways of materials expansion near ablation threshold and compare the phase diagramm of metals with that of Lennard-Jones material.
