Electrostatic ion beam devices are known for their capability to achieve mass spectral resolving powers in the order of m/Δ m >105. Thereby bunches of ions with different mass-over-charge ratios can be separated during their repeated oscillation between two electrostatic mirrors. The method of operation is similar to a time of flight distance of several hundred meters that is folded to less than one meter. We plan to make use of this concept and to build a device based on Electrostatic Ion Beam Trap design of the Weizmann Institute in order to physically separate isobaric ions as a preparatory step of the ISOLTRAP at CERN/Geneva. In a test setup at Greifswald it will be attempted to separate CO and N2 ions. Status, first measurements and aimed objectives of the test apparatus will be presented. The project is funded by the BMBF.
