We present the first experimental realization of a relativistic laser-plasma electron accelerator that is able to directly access the so-called bubble regime. In contrast to earlier experiments the ultrashort laser pulses applied in this experiment provide 50 mJ on target at pulse durations of 8.5 fs. These pulses, generated by a novel ultra broadband non-collinear OPCPA, allow us to operate in the bubble regime without relying on self modulation of the laser pulse in the plasma, producing electron energies of up to 35 MeV. We present first experimental evidence of more stable operation of the electron acceleration process and of improved efficiency due to less background of low energy electrons in the electron beam.
