Whispering-Gallery-Mode Raman Spectroscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic technique for the characterisation of size and chemical composition of spherical paricles of sizes between ca. 5 and 100 µ m. By means of a pulsed laser whispering gallery modes are excited within the particles which lead to an enhanced Raman signal at characteristic wavelengths. We show that this method can be used to gain information in particular from the particle surface. Therefore it is of great interest for the characterisation of thin layers deposited on microparticles, e.g. in molecular plasmas. We present investigations of different microparticles in air and results from particles levitated in an Argon rf-plasma.
