Multichannel photon counting system for time-resolved Thomson scattering plasma diagnostics — •Victor Gorshelev and Henning Soltwisch — Ruhr Universität, Bochum, Germany

Thomson scattering is a non-intrusive method to determine electron temperature and electron density of a plasma. Being a standard diagnostic for high temperature and high density plasmas, attempts have been made to apply Thomson scattering to low temperature discharges like ECR-, ICP- and RF capacitively coupled discharges during the recent years.

However, experimental conditions (low scattered signal level, intensive background emission) require the use of sophisticated instrumentation. A double monochromator is utilized to supress the plasma background radiation. Multichannel photomultiplier system serves for simultaneous photon counting and further signal processing.

Implementation and operation of this technique on RF discharges in Argon will be presented.
