On the existence and vanishing of the breathing mode — •Christian Henning1, Kenji Fujioka2, Alexander Piel3, Patrick Ludwig1, and Michael Bonitz11CAU zu Kiel, ITAP, D-24118 Kiel — 2City College of New York, NY 10031 — 3CAU zu Kiel, IEAP, D-24118 Kiel

From normal mode analysis of harmonically confined Coulomb systems of any dimension the breathing mode, a radial and uniform oscillation, is well known and also topic of actual research [1,2]. Investigations of other systems (e.g. Yukawa, Lennard-Jones) also use the properties of this breathing mode [3,4].

Here, we show that the concept of the breathing mode can not in general be transferred from Coulomb systems to other systems [5]. We derive an equation for the existence of the breathing mode, present the condition for its existence and show counter-examples of different types.
