Intense heavy ion beams delivered by the accelerator facilities of the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) mbH Darmstadt facilitate together with the two laser systems NHELIX and PHELIX facilitate pioneering beam-plasma interaction experiments. The ultimate goal of the work presented here is the employment of cryogenic solid-state targets, especially Deuterium and Hydrogen, experimets for the measurement of the energy loss of heavy ions in dense, laser produced plasmas. Presently the cryogenic system has been built and tested by growing cryogenic crystals of Neon, Argon and Nitrogen. The setup and results of these tests are presented and different future designs of the cryogenic targets are discussed within this contribution.
