The FlareLab project at Bochum University is a concerted experimental and numerical effort to study the dynamics of magnetic flux ropes reminiscent of arc-shaped solar prominences. Following previous work of Hansen and Bellan [1], an arc-shaped discharge is used for the generation of the magnetic flux ropes. The main diagnostics are a fast ICCD camera with an exposure time of 5 ns and pick-up coils to measure the magnetic field created by the flux ropes. The key observations are: i) pinching of the flux rope, ii) expansion of the current arc and iii) kink-like structures deforming the arc. Concomitantly numerical simulations are performed to analyse the observations in detail. The magneto-hydrodynamic equations are utilised for the plasma description, and three-dimensional numerical solutions are computed on an adaptive mesh [2]. Observations of the magnetic probe measurements are discussed and a new design of the plasma source based on a model of Titov and Démoulin [3] is presented.
