The chemical erosion of carbon-containing plasma-facing components (PFC) has a significant influence on their life time and on the tritium retention, which are limiting factors for the availability of ITER. In tokamak experiments chemical erosion is determined regularly by spectroscopic measurement of the CD A-X band and the C2 d-a emission. The light emission reflects the atomic/molecular physics and the hydrocarbon (HC) transport in the boundary plasma of tokamaks. The transport is influenced by plasma parameters and surface geometry.

The 3D Monte Carlo code ERO aims to simulate these processes as following, surface erosion by plasma and impurity particles, deposition from plasma, transport of plasma impurities and their light emission. The ERO simulations for HCs require a large set of atomic and molecular data, which has to be tested, updated and extended continuously.

Dedicated experiments for ERO benchmarking were carried out at TEXTOR in which hydrocarbons were injected into the plasma near the LCFS. The respective ERO simulations are compared with the experimental observations. The key parameters like e.g. the dependence of CD, C2 and CII penetration depths on plasma parameters show a good agreement with the modelling. Detailed comparison between modelling and experimental results will be presented.
