Entanglement is a powerful resource, serving as key ingredient for most quantum communication and quantum computation schemes. Many of these applications rely on multiparticle entanglement, whose generation, manipulation and characterization therefore became a very active field in quantum information science. Here, we present techniques for the experimental observation of different multiphoton polarization entangled states and various tools to characterize and distinguish them.
The first part of the talk addresses two different types of four-photon entangled states: The cluster state, well-known as resource for the one-way quantum computer, and the symmetric Dicke state with two excitations, which belongs to the superradiant states identified by R. H. Dicke. Particularly interesting for quantum information is that the latter state allows to obtain representative states of different three-qubit entanglement classes via simple local projective measurements.
Representatives of other four-qubit entanglement classes are experimentally analyzed in the second part of the talk, where we introduce a new type of linear optics setup. It is, in contrast to the common approach, designed to allow the observation of entire families of multiphoton entangled states in a single experiment. This possibility can be especially useful for quantum communication, where different protocols require different quantum states.
