Remarks on "General Covariance" and "Background Independence" — •Domenico Giulini — AEI, Potsdam
General Covariance and/or Background Independence are usually considered to be central requirements for any unifying theory of fundamental interactions, including Gravity and hence also a theory of SpaceTime. However, a precise definition of these terms seems elusive and it is unclear (to me) in precisely what sense the corresponding requirements really constitute non-trivial heuristic principles. In my talk I will describe some of the main difficulties.
