The energy budget in the mesopause region is significantly determined by atomic oxygen and atomic hydrogen. Both species can be derived by limb measurements of the Sciamachy instrument onboard the european Envisat satellite. The instrument observes emissions from all vibrational states of OH up to v=9 and so chemical heating rates and atomic oxygen densities can be retrieved in excellent quality. The combination with Gomos star occultation observations of mesospheric ozone gives the opportunity to derive atomic hydrogen densities in the upper mesosphere - lower thermosphere.
