EISCAT: a tool to study coupling between the near-Earth plasma and the upper atmosphere — •Michael Rietveld — EISCAT Scientific Association, N-9027 Ramfjordbotn, Norway

The EISCAT incoherent scatter radar facilities are able to provide high quality ionospheric data at altitudes typically between 70 and about 600 km, but sometimes at lower or higher altitudes, in the auroral zone and the polar cap. Indeed, during the International Polar Year, such data is being provided continuously by the EISCAT Svalbard radar. Examples of the science that is being done and that could be done are presented. In addition, HF facilities, like the ionospheric heating facility and dynasonde, provide complementary data which is of particular value in the lower ionosphere and upper atmosphere. Examples of on-going mesospheric studies are presented.
