During the next few years, the discovery of Earth-like, rocky exoplanets is expected by ground-based observations and satellite missions such as CoRoT and Kepler. Planned (e.g., Darwin) space missions will be able to provide spectral information of the atmospheres of these planets.
Theoretical investigations of the atmospheres of terrestrial planets and their spectral characteristics lead to the identification of potentially interesting spectral bands and features which should be considered when designing the missions.
The modeling of the atmospheres of up to now hypothetical terrestrial planets enables us to cover a wide range of planetary parameters and probe possible planet scenarios (e.g., size and age of planet, central star type, atmospheric composition, surface pressure). The calculation of synthetic spectra, based on the modeling results, is useful information for future measurement campaigns.
We will present synthetic infrared emission spectra of a wide range of hypothetical terrestrial extrasolar planets and discuss the possibility of biomarker detections in these spectra. We also discuss the possibility of remote sensing of the atmospheric structure.
