Numerical Relativity, Black Holes and Gravitational Waves — •Bernd Brügmann — Theoretisch-Physikalisches Institut, Universität Jena
Recent advances in the numerical methods to simulate black hole systems in general relativity have for the first time allowed simulations of complete orbits of two black holes. This opens the door to the study of black hole systems during the most dynamic, non-linear phase of their inspiral, collision, and merger. We review the state of the art and discuss recent results on gravitational waves produced during black hole mergers. Furthermore, we consider black hole recoil effects, which describe the kick that the merged object may receive due to the asymmetric emission of gravitational waves.
