Potential of CTA to find signatures of dark matter annihilation in the center of the Virgo Cluster — •Dominik Elsässer1, Dieter Horns2, Karl Mannheim3, and Joachim Ripken4 — 1Universität Würzburg — 2DESY Hamburg — 3Universität Würzburg — 4DESY Hamburg
We show that the annihilation of dark matter composed of weakly interacting massive particles in the center of the Virgo cluster leads to a flux of secondary gamma rays that can be detected with the planned CTA gamma ray observatory. The spectrum peaking in the 10-100 GeV regime is quiescent and can thus be distinguished from the highly variable, hard spectrum AGN component possibly due to the jet in M87. Furthermore, the surface brightness is expected to be non-uniform, and thus provides an independent means of supporting the relation to DMA in a clumpy dark matter halo. A correlated signal at MeV gamma ray energies due to inverse Compton scattering could be detected by future medium-energy gamma ray satellite missions.
