The Large Hadron Collider at CERN will give excellent possibilities to improve our understanding of QCD phenomena.
The presentation concentrates on small x physics expected to be accessible with the forward calorimeter CASTOR in the CMS experiment. Studies of forward jet production, as well as studies on multiple interactions will be presented. This physics is studied in order to understand the dynamics of the strong force. The gained knowledge can be used to reduce the QCD background and to minimize uncertainties in more discovery oriented measurements .
In the study of forward jets, sensitivity to parton dynamics beyond DGLAP are seen for 3-jet events with a forward jet in the CASTOR region and a di-jet pair in the main CMS detector.
In the multiple interaction study it is shown that different scenarios can be distinguished by looking at the long range correlation between the energy deposit in CASTOR and the particle multiplicity in the main detector.
