The use of Roman Pot Detectors at HERA and LHC — •Anatoli Astvatsatourov, Michael Düren, Hasko Stenzel, and Sascha Hoffmann — II Phys. Institut, Uni. Giessen, Heinrich-Buff-Ring 16, 35392 Giessen

"Roman Pots" at HERA and LHC are used to place fiber detectors up to a few mm close to the beam. They can be used to calibrate other detectors, to determine absolute luminosity and to measure diffractive processes. They could be also useful to the accelerator groups for beam profile diagnostics. The "Roman Pots" are situated at a large distance downstream the interaction point and extend the acceptance of the main detector towards very small scattering angles. One of the highlights at HERA was the discovery of rapidity gap data. The "Roman Pots" are used here to extend diffractive kinematic region. For LHC they are intended to measure absolute luminosity and a highlight for the use of "Roman Pots" could be the precise mass determination of the Higgs in diffractive production.
