Search for the Higgs boson in the channel H→ ZZ(*) → 4ℓ with the ATLAS detector — •Daniela Rebuzzi, Siegfried Bethke, Alessia D’Orazio, Sandra Horvat, Oliver Kortner, and Hubert Kroha — for the ATLAS Collaboration, Max-Planck-Institut für Physik, D-80805 München
The decay channel H → ZZ*→ 4ℓ provides a clean signature for the Higgs boson in the mass range between ∼120 GeV/c2 and 2MZ, where the "golden" decay into two real Z bosons opens up.
Crucial for this channel is a very good understanding of the trigger and detector response for lepton identification and reconstruction. The ATLAS discovery potential for this channel has been evaluated, including realistic and up-to-date description of the detector performance. The observability of the signal on top of the reducible tt, Zbb and WZ and the irreducible ZZ backgrounds is discussed in detail. For the first time, the impact of detector misalignment and miscalibration on the signal significance is included and the influence of pile-up and cavern background expected for a luminosity of 1033 cm−2s−1 taken into account.
