Identification of Higgs→ττ Decays with Topological Calorimeter Clusters — •Jieh-Wen Tsung, Jörn Grosse-Knetter, Eckhard von Törne, and Norbert Wermes — Physikalisches Institut, University of Bonn, Germany

The Higgs→ τ τ channel is promising to find the Higgs boson, if its mass is smaller than 200 GeV. In this research, topological clusters reconstructed in the calorimeters of ATLAS were applied to distinguish 1 prong τ-decays: τ± → ρ± ν → π0 π± ν, τ±a1 ν → 2π0π±ν, and τ± → π± ν. The clusters from π0 and π± should be separated enough to allow for ρ, a1, or π± mass reconstruction using the π±+nπ0 final states(n=0,1,2). Various threshold settings of topological clustering were tested to find the optimized configuration to distinguish τ decay channels. Properties of clusters, e.g. the energy density, penetration depth in calorimeter, dimensions...etc., were used to distinguish π0 and π± clusters. This method might improve non-τ-background rejection due to different cluster topologies.
