µ-Jet-MET SUSY analysis with the CMS detector — •Holger Pieta, Daniel Teyssier, and Thomas Hebbeker — III. Physikalisches Institut A, RWTH Aachen

The CMS detector is well suited to detect mSUGRA-Supersymmetry signals with R-parity conservation.

We investigate signatures with at least one muon, high transverse momentum (pt) jets and transverse energy (MET). Such events are expected in SUSY-models due to decaying heavy SUSY-particles. At the end of the decay chain the lightest SUSY-particle will escape the detector unseen, resulting in a large MET.

The relatively high cross section and the clear signature will make it possible to detect mSUGRA in early runs, with an integrated luminosity of 10 to 1000 pb−1. The high energy of the LHC will increase the reach in the mSUGRA parameter space far beyond LEP and TEVATRON.

We evaluate the use of Boosted-Decision-Trees (BDTs) to select muons and jets from SUSY decays in contrast to background muons and jets using kinematic and detector variables. To maximize the discovery significance or improve the limits, we use the selected muons and jets, accompanied by MET, to train BDTs to separate SUSY events from background. The performance of BDTs compared to manually optimized cuts is evaluated for some points in the mSUGRA parameter space (so called “Benchmark Points“).
