Data-driven estimation of Standard Model backgrounds to supersymmetric searches in ATLASSiegfried Bethke1, Renaud Bruneliere2, Joerg Dubbert1, Hubert Kroha1, Federica Legger1, Joerg von Loeben1, •Vadym Zhuravlov1, and XuAi Zhuang1 for the ATLAS-Myon collaboration — 1Max-Planck-Institut für Physik, D-80805 München — 2Albert-Ludwig-Universität D-79085 Freiburg

The estimation of the Standard Model backgrounds is a key point to the searches for supersymmetry at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN with early data. Due to the insufficient knowledge of cross-sections, underlying event and parton distribution functions, it is necessary to develop methods for the extraction of the background level from experimental data, possibly in the presence of new, non Standard Model physics.

We report on methods for the estimation of tt and Z→ ν ν backgrounds in the search for supersymmetric particles with the ATLAS detector in events with energetic jets, missing transverse energy, and zero, one, or two leptons. The tt background is estimated by explicit reconstruction of the event kinematics, whereas the estimation of the Z→ ν ν contribution is based on the extrapolation from Ze e events.
