First studies of a prototype GEM readout for a future ILC-TPC — •Bakul Gaur, Peter Buchholz, Ivor Fleck, Markus Schumacher, Ulrich Werthenbach, and Wolfgang Walkowiak — Universität Siegen

As planned by the worldwide high energy physics community, the ILC (International Linear Collider) will be the next large particle collider after the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). The ILC will allow precision measurements refining any LHC findings. This requires very precise measurements of energy and momentum and high-resolution vertex reconstruction. To build a detector like that requires tremendous technical effort. A TPC (Time Projection Chamber) with pad readout is the most favorable choice for its central tracker.

A small TPC prototype with readout pads has been built. Inside the TPC, gas amplification is achieved by means of GEMs (Gas Electron Multiplier). A stack of two to three GEM foils provide significant gas amplification, so that the resultant charge deposited on the pad-plane can be easily processed electronically. An understanding of the GEM voltages, transfer and induction fields, help optimize the GEM gains, and leads to stable operation of the detector system. A DAQ system has been built to perform measurements to study the performance of the TPC prototype.
