The CMS Muon Barrel System: Commissioning and Performance — •Emanuel Jacobi, Georg Altenhöfer, Thomas Hebbeker, Kerstin Hoepfner, Hans Reithler, Michael Sowa, and Oleg Tsigenov — III. Physikalisches Institut A, RWTH Aachen

The CMS muon barrel system provides a precise measurement of the position and the momentum of high energy muons. It consists of 250 drift tube chambers, with rectangular drift cells filled with a gas mixture of 85%  Ar and 15%  CO2.

Our group participated in the construction and the commissioning of the drift tube chambers. By now, all chambers have been installed at their final position. Subsequently cosmic muons have been recorded individually for all chambers to evaluate the detector performance.

After lowering the CMS wheels into the underground cavern - another completed activity - chambers and electronics are being connected to the final services and the higher level readout and trigger electronics. In the currently performed sector commissioning, cosmic muon data are recorded for complete sectors in final conditions. These data provide also a good opportunity to study the reconstruction algorithms. In preparation of the anticipated LHC start-up the focus is on the validation of the muon trigger and the synchronization.

Results of the commissioning of individual chambers and of complete sectors will be presented, demonstrating the performance of the CMS muon barrel drift tube system.
