3D Temperature Map of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer — •Doris Merkl — Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München

The temperature distribution in the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer is measured by 12220 temperature sensors (read out via MDT-Detector Control System DCS) fixed on the Monitored Drift Tube (MDT) chambers. From these measurements, a 3D temperature map is produced and can help for monitoring of hot spots for the data quality, detector calibration, alignment and safety. The temperature measurements are important for the alignment because of deformations of MDT chambers due to temperature gradients and for the MDT calibration. The calibration has to be adjusted closely to possible temperature changes during the ATLAS operation since the measured position (drift radius r) of a muon hit changes at a rate of approx. −45 µ m per Kelvin temperature variation.
