Alignment of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer with Tracks — •Igor Potrap, Bernhard Bittner, Oliver Kortner, Sergey Kotov, and Hubert Kroha — MPI fur Physik, Föhringer Ring 6, D-80805 München, for the ATLAS Muon Collaboration
Movements of the muon chambers in the ATLAS muon spectrometers are monitored by an optical alignment monitoring system with an accuracy better than 10 µm. The initial positions of the chambers must be determined with straight muon tracks from cosmic rays and, more importantly, from pp collisions with the magnetic field turned off. An alignment algorithm based on the MILLEPEDE method has been developed for this task. The required alignment accuracy of 30 µm is achieved by the algorithm if constraints of the optical system are included. Methods using redundant momentum measurement techniques will be used in presence of the magnetic field to measure the positions of chambers without precise optical links to the rest of the spectrometer, and to cross-check the results of the optical alignment system. The track and sensor data will be processed with latency of 24 hours in the muon calibration centre in Munich.
