ATLAS Pixel Front-End Chip Simulation for B-Layer replacement and sLHC — •David Arutinov, Marlon Barbero, and Volker Büscher — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Bonn

ATLAS is a multi-purpose detector which will start operation in the middle of 2008 at the LHC with a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV. The LHC collision frequency is 40MHz and at design luminosity an average of 1600 particles will be produced in every bunch-crossing. The pixel detector of ATLAS is closest to the collision point, and its innermost layer is called the B-Layer. It has been designed to sustain only a few years of LHC full luminosity operation after which it needs to be replaced (approx. 2012). This replacement will also give the opportunity to improve the detector's characteristics: the pixel upgrade collaboration aims to reduce material, improve powering scheme, reduce the innermost layer radius and the pixel size. With a smaller B-Layer radius, increased chip size, smaller pixel size, and increased luminosity, the hit rate per chip increases dramatically and the current pixel electronics architecture would not be able to cope with these new conditions. A very different architecture for the pixel electronics is mandatory and first schemes have been proposed and simulated, focusing especially on inefficiencies of the data transfer in the Front-End.
