We present results of the test beam studies of the final prototype of CASTOR Cherenkov quartz-tungsten sampling calorimeter. The calorimeter will be installed in the very forward region (5.1 < η < 6.6) of the CMS experiment at the LHC. The beam test was carried out in the H2 line at the CERN/SPS in 2007 using beams of electrons, pions and muons of various energies. The CASTOR calorimeter consists of an electromagnetic and a hadronic section, with successive layers of tungsten plates as absorber and fused silica quartz plates as active material. The Cherenkov light produced by the incoming charged particles is collected in reading units along the depth of the calorimeter and transported onto PMTs by air-core light-guides. Results on the energy linearity and resolution of the calorimeter, as well as the spatial uniformity and resolution, leakage, muon calibration are presented and compared to GEANT4 simulations.
