Triggering on forward physics with CMS at the LHC — •Severine Ovyn1, Xavier Rouby1, Monika Grothe2, Vincent Lemaitre1, and Krzysztof Piotrzkowski1 — 1Universite Catholique de Louvain (UCL), Belgium — 2University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA
Forward physics with CMS at the LHC covers a wide range of physics subjects, including very low-x QCD, underlying event and multiple interactions characteristics, photon-mediated processes, shower development at the energy scale of primary cosmic ray interactions with the atmosphere, diffraction in the presence of a hard scale and even MSSM Higgs discovery in central exclusive production. A common feature of forward physics processes is their relatively low values of transverse energy ET and transverse momenta PT. In order to retain forward physics processes in the CMS trigger, which generally requires high ET or high PT objects, special trigger conditions are needed. We report on the development of forward physics triggers for CMS.
