First Ideas for a Monte-Carlo based reconstruction for IceCube — •Jan-Patrick Hülß and Christopher Wiebusch — RWTH Aachen
In IceCube reconstruction is usually based on the maximisation of a likelihood function modelling the expected arrival times of the photoelectrons. This involves parameterisations and idealisations of the light generation, propagation and detection. In a Monte-Carlo based (Top-Down) reconstruction the comparison is based on detector level observables. This approach has been developed by the PiereAuger experiment. For this purpose Monte-Carlo events are simulated according to different track hypotheses and the algorithm converges to the track with the best agreement to the experimental observables. The drawback is the huge amount of required Monte-Carlo data, therefore only the few most interesting events can be subject of this reconstruction. The Monte-Carlo data includes the full stochastics of all involved processes and the accuracy is not degraded by idealisations which are typical for reconstructions.
This talk describes an implementation of this algorithm for IceCube and first results of the performance when applied to low energy neutrino events.
