Cascades in the LPM regime with IceCube — •Julien Bolmont for the IceCube collaboration — DESY, Platanenallee 6, 15738 Zeuthen, Germany

With a volume of ∼1 km3, IceCube will be able to detect very high energy neutrinos above ∼100 PeV. At these energies, bremsstrahlung and pair production are suppressed by the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. Therefore, νe and ντ interactions in the ice can produce cascades several hundred meter long. To study such events, we have developed a detailed simulation tool based on CORSIKA able to simulate very high energy cascades in the LPM regime in ice or (salt) water. Here the results obtained from this tool are compared with simulations from other packages and possible applications are discussed. In particular, we discuss the possible improvement of IceCube angular reconstruction precision for νe events when the lengthening of the cascades due to the LPM effect is taken into account.
