In (γ ,n) experiments, e.g. at the NEPTUN photon tagger system at the S-DALINAC, the neutron spectroscopy has to be realized in an enviroment of high photon background and therefore an effective discrimination between photons and neutrons is mandatory. Liquid scintillators like BC501A allow a separation of neutrons and photons based on a pulse shape analysis of the subsequent photomultiplier pulses. However, the quality of this separation is not constant, but varies with the incident neutron energy. The energy dependence of the pulse shapes and the resulting separation is studied in detail using digital pulse shape analysis. First results will be presented.
